Background of the Study

Early marriage is a prevalent practice in many rural communities in Nigeria, particularly in Azare Local Government Area, Bauchi State. This practice has profound implications for the rights, health, and socio-economic development of young girls. Development communication has emerged as a transformative tool for addressing early marriage by raising awareness, challenging social norms, and advocating for policy changes. Recent studies emphasize the effectiveness of participatory communication strategies, such as community dialogues, drama, and storytelling, in addressing sensitive cultural issues like early marriage (Musa et al., 2023; Ahmed & Ojo, 2024). When communication interventions are designed to involve community leaders, parents, and young people, they foster collective action and attitudinal change. Evidence suggests that integrating digital and traditional media platforms can amplify the reach and impact of anti-early marriage campaigns (Yusuf & Bello, 2025). This study investigates the role of development communication in eradicating early marriage practices in Azare LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts by governments and international organizations, early marriage remains widespread in Azare LGA, perpetuating cycles of poverty, illiteracy, and poor health outcomes. One of the major barriers to eradicating early marriage is the lack of effective communication strategies that address deep-seated cultural norms and beliefs (Akinola & Musa, 2023). Existing communication efforts often fail to engage key stakeholders, including traditional leaders and religious institutions, reducing their impact (Okafor et al., 2024). Without a robust development communication framework, initiatives to combat early marriage risk being unsustainable and ineffective. This study examines how development communication can drive social change and eradicate early marriage practices in Azare LGA.
